Title Case rules
There is no single official Title Case standard. Style guides such as APA, Chicago and AP differ on small details. This tool follows the common rule of keeping short articles, conjunctions and prepositions (a, an, the, and, but, or, for, of, in, on, to and similar) in lowercase unless they are the first word. The American Psychological Association explains its version on the APA title case page. Always double-check names and brands, like "iPhone" or "McDonald's", which have their own spelling.
Tips for writers and developers
- Headlines in Title Case or Sentence case both work for SEO. Pick one style and use it across your site.
- Avoid writing full sentences in UPPERCASE. It is harder to read and feels like shouting.
- For website URLs, convert titles with our Slug Generator, which also removes symbols.
Count your words and characters with the Word Counter, or grab sample text from the Lorem Ipsum Generator. See all text and developer tools.

Title Case vs. Sentence case for headlines
Both styles are correct; the important thing is to pick one and use it consistently. Many news sites and style guides, such as the Associated Press and most UK publications, use sentence case for headlines because it reads more naturally. Many US blogs, books and marketing pages use Title Case. Google shows your title as you write it, so consistency across your site looks more professional.
Fixing text typed with Caps Lock on
Everyone has typed a paragraph and realised Caps Lock was on. Instead of retyping, paste the text here and click Sentence case. The first letter of each sentence becomes capital and everything else lower case. You may need to re-capitalise names and acronyms by hand, such as "Pakistan" or "SEO".
Case styles for developers
Different programming languages have different naming conventions. For example, the PEP 8 style guide recommends snake_case for Python functions and variables and PascalCase for classes, while JavaScript usually uses camelCase for variables. Converting quickly between styles helps when you move data between an API, a database and front-end code. For JSON data, the JSON Formatter makes the structure readable after you rename keys.
Case and SEO
Search engines treat upper and lower case words the same in content, but URLs can be case sensitive on many servers. Always use lower case in URLs; the Slug Generator does this automatically. For headlines, write naturally and check how they look in Google with the SERP Preview. Avoid writing whole titles in UPPERCASE: they look like shouting and are harder to read.

Case conversion in Word, Excel and Google Sheets
You can also change case inside office software, which is handy for long documents:
- Microsoft Word: select the text and press Shift + F3 to cycle between lowercase, UPPERCASE and Capitalize Each Word. The Home tab also has an "Aa" button with more options.
- Excel: use the formulas
=UPPER(A2),=LOWER(A2)and=PROPER(A2)to convert a column, then paste the results as values. - Google Sheets: the same
UPPER,LOWERandPROPERfunctions work. - Google Docs: Format > Text > Capitalization.
These built-in options cover the basic cases. For programming styles such as camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case, or for proper Title Case that keeps small words like "and" and "of" in lower case, this converter is faster and more accurate. A common workflow is to clean a list of product names or headings here, then paste the result back into your spreadsheet or document.
