About marla and kanal
Marla and kanal are land units used in Pakistan and northern India. The size of a marla is not the same everywhere. This converter uses 1 marla = 225 square feet (so 1 kanal = 4,500 ft²), which is common in many housing societies. Some areas and old revenue records use 272.25 square feet per marla. Always confirm with the local land authority or your property documents.
The values for standard units follow the international SI system, explained by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Temperature is different
Temperature scales do not start at the same zero, so they cannot be converted by multiplying alone. The formulas are °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15. The converter handles this for you.

Quick reference: everyday conversions
| From | To | Multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| inch | centimetre | 2.54 (exact) |
| foot | metre | 0.3048 (exact) |
| mile | kilometre | 1.609344 (exact) |
| kilogram | pound | about 2.20462 |
| ounce | gram | about 28.3495 |
| litre | US gallon | about 0.264172 |
| square metre | square foot | about 10.7639 |
| acre | square metre | about 4,046.86 |
Some of these, like the inch and the foot, are exact by international definition. Others are rounded to a sensible number of digits.
Land measurement in Pakistan
Land in Pakistan is often measured in marla, kanal and acre, but the size of a marla is not the same everywhere:
- A marla of 225 square feet is common in many official land records and housing societies.
- A marla of 272.25 square feet is used in some areas and older revenue records.
- Some developers use 250 square feet in their own plans.
1 kanal = 20 marla, and 1 acre = 8 kanal = 160 marla. This converter uses 1 marla = 225 square feet. Before buying or selling property, always confirm which marla size the seller, the housing society and the land record use, because the difference on a 10-marla plot can be several hundred square feet.
Traditional weights: tola and maund
Gold in South Asia is still priced per tola. One tola is defined as 11.6638 grams. A maund (mann) is used for crops and is about 37.32 kilograms (40 seers). These units are handy when comparing local prices with international prices quoted in grams, ounces or kilograms.
Metric vs. imperial in daily life
Most of the world uses the metric system (metres, kilograms, litres), while the USA still uses imperial units for many everyday things. The UK uses a mix, for example miles on road signs and kilograms in shops. When reading recipes, product specifications or fitness plans from another country, a quick conversion avoids costly mistakes. The official definitions of SI units are published by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).
Data sizes: KB, MB and GB
Computers use two systems. In the decimal system, 1 KB is 1,000 bytes; in the binary system, 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes. That is why a "500 GB" hard drive shows about 465 GB in Windows. This matters when you compress images or PDFs; see the Image Compressor and Compress PDF tools for real file sizes.

Converting temperatures, speed and fuel
A few conversions are not simple multiplications:
- Temperature: F = C x 9/5 + 32, and C = (F - 32) x 5/9. Water freezes at 0 C (32 F) and boils at 100 C (212 F) at sea level.
- Speed: 1 km/h = 0.621 mph, and 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h.
- Fuel economy: kilometres per litre and miles per gallon depend on which gallon is used. Litres per 100 km is the reverse of km per litre, so a car using 8 L/100 km does 12.5 km per litre.
When reading imported product specifications, check units carefully, especially for power ratings, cable sizes and screen sizes, which are often given in inches.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes, while 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes (1024 × 1024). Storage makers use MB, while some operating systems show MiB.
How many square feet are in a marla?
This tool uses 225 square feet. Some regions use 272.25 square feet, so check locally.
Are US and UK gallons the same?
No. A US gallon is about 3.785 liters and a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 liters.
Is the converter free?
Yes, free and it runs in your browser.
How many marla are in one kanal?
20 marla. With a 225 square foot marla, one kanal is 4,500 square feet.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 30 C is 86 F.
Why is a US gallon different from a UK gallon?
They come from different historical standards. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres, while a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 litres.
