Four ways to split a PDF

This PDF splitter runs completely in your browser, so private documents stay on your device. Choose the mode that fits your task:

  • Extract pages into one PDF: type pages such as 1-3, 5, 8-10 and get one new file with only those pages.
  • Each range into its own PDF: 1-3, 4-6 gives you two separate files.
  • Every page as a separate PDF: perfect for splitting a batch of scanned forms.
  • Every N pages: for example, split a 20-page file into ten 2-page files.

When the result is more than one file, you get them all in a single ZIP download.

How to split a PDF

  1. Choose or drop your PDF file. The page count appears straight away.
  2. Pick how you want to split it.
  3. Enter the pages or the number of pages per file.
  4. Click Split PDF, then download the result.

Page range tips: separate ranges with commas, use a dash for a range, and you can write end for the last page, for example 5-end.

When splitting a PDF helps

  • Sending only the relevant pages of a long contract or report
  • Uploading documents to portals that have a file size limit
  • Separating monthly statements that arrived as one big file
  • Removing pages you do not want to share: extract everything except them

Good to know

Pages are copied exactly, so text stays selectable and quality does not change. Bookmarks and some interactive form features may not carry over into the new files. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.

If your extracted pages are still too large, run them through Compress PDF. To put pages back together in a new order, use Merge PDF. Need a page as a picture for social media or a presentation? Try PDF to Image.

This tool is built on the open-source pdf-lib library. See all our PDF and image tools.

Split, then share

After splitting, most people do one more thing with the new files. You can join selected pages from several documents with Merge PDF, reduce the size for email with Compress PDF, or turn a page into a JPG for WhatsApp with PDF to Image. Photos of paper pages can be turned into a PDF first with Image to PDF.

Page range examples

The page box accepts single pages and ranges separated by commas:

You typeYou get
3Only page 3
1-5Pages 1 to 5
1-3, 7, 10-12Pages 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 11 and 12
Every N pages = 2Pages 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and so on as separate files

Choose "Extract pages into one PDF" to get a single file with the pages you typed, or "Each range into its own PDF" to get one file per range.

Removing pages from a PDF

There is no separate "delete page" step: simply extract the pages you want to keep. For example, to remove page 4 from a 10-page document, extract 1-3, 5-10. The new file has nine pages and the original stays untouched on your device.

Splitting large scanned documents

Scanned files are often huge because every page is a photo. If an upload portal rejects your file:

  1. Split the document into the sections the portal asks for, such as "ID documents" and "Bank statements".
  2. Run each part through Compress PDF.
  3. Check each file opens correctly before uploading.

If you later need the parts together again, Merge PDF rejoins them in any order.

Practical uses at work and study

  • Teachers sending one chapter of a textbook to a class.
  • Accountants separating a year's bank statement into months.
  • HR teams splitting a batch scan of many employees' forms into individual files.
  • Students submitting only the pages a professor asked for.
  • Lawyers sharing only the relevant annexure instead of the whole contract.

Privacy and quality

Splitting happens entirely in your browser with the open-source pdf-lib library. Pages are copied exactly, so text stays selectable and quality does not drop. When several files are created, they are bundled into one ZIP download so your browser does not ask you to save dozens of files one by one. If you would rather share individual pages as pictures, use PDF to Image.

Example: splitting a yearly bank statement

Many banks send one long PDF for a whole year, but loan or visa applications often ask for only the last three or six months. Here is how to split it:

  1. Open the statement in a PDF viewer and note the page numbers where each month starts, for example July on page 14 and December ending on page 26.
  2. Open this tool, choose Extract pages and type 14-26.
  3. Download the new file and name it clearly, such as Statement-Jul-Dec-2026.pdf.
  4. If the application asks for separate files per month, choose Each range into its own PDF and type each month's range separated by commas.

Always share only the pages that are required. Sending a full year of transactions shares more personal financial information than necessary. Because this tool runs in your browser, the statement is never uploaded anywhere while you split it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Splitting happens on your device and nothing is sent to a server.

Can I delete pages from a PDF?

Yes. Extract all the pages you want to keep into one PDF, for example 1-4, 6-10 to drop page 5.

Why is the ZIP file needed?

Browsers download one file at a time more reliably, so multiple PDFs are packed into one ZIP. Open it to see each PDF.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. Scanned pages are split just like any other page.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not without the password. Open it in a PDF reader with the password and save an unprotected copy if you are allowed to.

Will the split files be smaller?

Usually yes, but shared resources such as fonts may be copied into each file, so the parts together can be slightly larger than the original.

What happens if I type a page number that does not exist?

The tool tells you the document has fewer pages, so you can correct the range.
