Convert image formats in your browser

Sometimes a website, app or form only accepts one image format. Or you downloaded a WebP image that your old software cannot open. This image converter changes images between the three most useful web formats, in bulk and in private.

Supported conversions include:

  • WebP to JPG and WebP to PNG
  • PNG to JPG and JPG to PNG
  • JPG to WebP and PNG to WebP for faster websites
  • GIF, BMP and SVG to JPG, PNG or WebP (the first frame of animated GIFs)

How to convert images

  1. Choose or drop one or more images.
  2. Pick the format to convert to.
  3. For JPG and WebP, set the quality. 85-90% keeps photos looking great.
  4. For JPG, choose the background color used where the image is transparent.
  5. Click Convert, then download images one at a time or as a ZIP.

JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which should I use?

JPGPhotosNoSmall

WebPWebsites (photos and graphics)YesSmallest

JPG uses lossy compression, which is ideal for photos but can blur sharp edges in text and logos. PNG is lossless and keeps every pixel, which makes it perfect for screenshots and graphics but heavy for photos. WebP, created by Google, supports both lossy and lossless compression and transparency, and it is supported by all modern browsers. Google's WebP page and MDN's image format guide explain the details.

Tips

  • Converting a JPG to PNG will not improve quality. It only makes the file bigger.
  • Converting PNG with transparency to JPG fills transparent areas with the background color you choose.
  • For websites, convert to WebP and then compress with the Image Compressor.
  • Need a different size too? Use the Image Resizer. Want a PDF instead? Try Image to PDF.

Which format for which job?

For website photos, choose WebP. For logos and screenshots that need sharp edges or transparency, choose PNG. For email attachments and printing services that may not accept WebP, choose JPG. If you are not sure, convert to WebP for your site and keep a JPG copy for everything else. Measure the result on your page with the Page Size Checker, and give each image good alt text, which you can review with the Image Alt Checker.

WebP to JPG. Some older apps, editors and upload forms do not accept WebP. Converting to JPG makes the image open everywhere.

PNG to JPG. Turns a large PNG photo or screenshot into a much smaller file for email or WhatsApp. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default.

JPG to PNG. Useful when an editor or template requires PNG. Note that it does not improve quality; the file just gets bigger.

JPG or PNG to WebP. The best choice for websites. Smaller images load faster, which helps your Core Web Vitals and SEO.

Quality settings explained

For JPG and WebP, a quality setting from 1 to 100 controls the balance between file size and detail. Around 80 is a good default. PNG has no quality slider because it is lossless; every pixel is kept exactly.

Converting for websites: a quick checklist

  1. Convert photos to WebP at quality 75-85.
  2. Resize them to the size they are displayed with the Image Resizer.
  3. Give files descriptive names like blue-office-chair.webp.
  4. Add alt text and check it with the Image Alt Checker.
  5. Measure the page weight with the Page Size Checker.

About HEIC and other formats

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. Most browsers cannot decode HEIC, so it cannot be converted here directly. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose "Most Compatible" to save new photos as JPG, or share existing photos via the Files app, which often converts them. Other formats such as GIF and BMP can be opened if your browser supports them and saved as JPG, PNG or WebP. Animated GIFs will be saved as a single frame.

The conversion uses your browser's own image engine, so your photos never leave your device. The MDN guide to image file types has more technical details on each format.

Example: converting screenshots for a support article

You took 12 PNG screenshots for a how-to guide, and each is around 1 MB.

  1. Add all screenshots and choose WebP with quality around 85, which keeps text in screenshots sharp.
  2. Download the ZIP.
  3. The files are usually much smaller than the original PNGs, often by more than half.

If your help desk or CMS does not accept WebP, choose JPG at quality 85-90 instead, or keep PNG for screenshots that must stay pixel-perfect, such as diagrams with thin lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to convert private photos here?

Yes. Images are converted in your browser and never uploaded.

Can I convert HEIC iPhone photos?

Only in browsers that can open HEIC, such as Safari. Otherwise, change your iPhone camera setting to "Most Compatible" to save JPGs.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, so it stores every detail. For photos, JPG or WebP is much smaller.

How many images can I convert at once?

There is no fixed limit. Large batches depend on your device's memory.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. Detail lost in the JPG cannot be recovered. The PNG will be a perfect copy of the JPG, just larger.

Can I convert to SVG?

No. SVG is a vector format made of shapes, not pixels. Turning a photo into SVG needs tracing software.

Is the original file changed?

No. The converted image is a new download; your original file stays as it was.
